ECO-FRIENDLY FIBRES

BAMBOO

As a plant, bamboo is fully sustainable, requires no pesticides, little irrigation, regenerates in 50-60 days and is fully biodegradable. A perfect fabric for those who are eco-conscience, this textile is organic, sustainable and low-impact dyed. It is breathable, cool, naturally antibacterial, odor resistant, non-toxic & non-irritating, has natural wicking properties, and is machine washable too!! The bamboo plant used for textile purposes is not the same bamboo that pandas require for food.

HEMP

Hemp is an all-natural fiber that comes from the plant Cannabis sativa. It has been grown for at least 10,000 years all over the world. Unlike its close cousin, marijuana, it is not a drug, although it often gets mistakenly labeled as one. Growing hemp requires no herbicides or pesticides making it an extremely environmentally friendly crop. Hemp crops actually nourish the soil in which it is grown leaving nutrient rich farmland for rotation crops. The hemp plant yields extremely long fibers, which produce a fabric that is much stronger and more versatile than other fabrics. Hemp also breathes and wicks moisture better than cotton. Hemp fiber is an efficient insulator keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. It is also highly regarded for UV protection.

SOY

Soy fabric is made from the leftover dregs from soybean oil or tofu production. The protein is extracted and the fiber spun into cloth. It is an excellent recycle scenario that makes this fabric eco-friendly. Similar to natural silk, it is common for there to be occasional slubs in the soy fabric, which adds to its natural beauty.  Soy is incredibly soft and silky and is otherwise known as vegetable cashmere.

SEA-TIVA

The idea to incorporate seaweed into textiles was inspired by its health promoting nature. The fiber that resulted from this idea was Seacell - a cellulosic fiber with incorporated active substances of seaweed. First, a cellulose based fiber is produced using the eco-friendly Lyocell process. The resulting fiber then serves as the supporting material for the seaweed.  Calcium, magnesium, amino acids and vitamins are released by body moisture when the fabric is worn. Sea-Tiva fabrics are also breathable and soft.  It is perfect for anyone who has sensitive skin as this fabric facilitates the exchange of the nutrients naturally found in seaweed.

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is grown without pesticides from plants which are not genetically modified..  Organic cotton feels softer because the cotton fibers are left intact and not broken down by the chemicals used in the farming and processing of non-organic cotton.  Organic cotton is not finished with formaldehyde, which has been identified as a cancer-causing agent by the International Institute for Research on Cancer.  Formaldehyde is used to finish non-organic cotton products. The non-use of chemicals means that organic cotton is less likely to trigger allergies.  Non-organic cotton crops are the largest user of chemical herbicides, pesticides and water of any crop, and depletes the soil of essential nutrients.

Organic cotton is also available in colours.  Some are dyed using eco-friendly dyes while another selection from Peru is coloured by using fibres from naturally pigmented cotton.   Cotton plants used to be available in several colours; but coloured strains were slowly phased out of commercial cultivation and production. The textile industry wanted the creamy white strains because inexpensive chemical dyes would create an unlimited palette and no specialized harvest techniques or facilities were needed, as they are for naturally pigmented cottons.  Our Peruvian supplier has been awarded organic certification for both the growing and textile transformation processes by several internationally recognized and accredited inspection organizations.  These fabrics are also Fair Trade certified

CHINTOSANTE

This textile has been combined with Chitosan (a natural biomass made from crab and shrimp shells) during the drying and/or finishing process to create an absorbent, breathable, durable, fast drying, soft, static-free, wrinkle-free, pill resistant fabric.  As well, it has natural and durable anti-bacterial properties so your finished garment stays fresh and odor free.  ChitoSante is the only anti-bacterial bio-agent in the world that is certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

ENVIRO REPREVE FLEECE

Repreve is a brand of recycled yarns by UNIFI. Repreve recycled yarn offsets the need to use new crude oil to produce virgin polyester and nylon.  For every 1 lb of Repreve yarn, 61,000BTU’s are conserved, equivalent to 0.5 gallons of gasoline. Repreve has also achieved the certification from Oeko-Tex, a well-known international eco-label. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is the world's leading label for textiles screened for harmful substances.
