ECO-FRIENDLY FIBRES

Modern sewers are becoming environmentally conscience of the fabrics they choose to sew with.  We at Gala Fabrics endeavor to meet that need by sourcing world wide for eco-friendly fabrics.  These fabrics are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers and include bamboo, hemp, and organic cotton.  Eco-friendly fabrics, being made from nature’s raw materials, are biodegradable thereby leading to a cleaner environment rather than adding to the problem in our landfills.  Ingenuity and innovation are the hallmark of eco-friendly yarns and fabrics, and since this is the way of the future, we strive to make available to our customers the latest fabric options.

SILK

One of the oldest and most versatile yarns still in use. Product of the silk worm in its cocoon stage. High tensile strength; accepts dyes readily; vulnerable to UV. Available in wide range of weights (mms.) and weaves (satin, crepe, shantung, faille, etc.) An excellent choice for clothing from casual to bridal. Popular for accent cushions, lined drapery, art quilting and craft work.

 COTTON

Combed fibre from the seed pod or 'boll' of the cotton plant. Popular for its 'breathability' and variable hand (soft, medium and hard) our cottons are carefully sourced. We do not carry Liberty(c) prints, but our changing selection of weights in prints, solids and even stretch weaves make our stores a must for the home and professional sewer, as well as quilters and crafters wanting something different.

WOOL

The Traditional choice for garments for cooler weather, from slip dresses to parkas. No animals are killed to provide the wool we sell. The processed fleece of sheep, goats, rabbits, etc. are used to produce satins, worsteds, gabardines, tweeds etc., in a wide variety of colours and weights. Some weaves are washable. Consult our knowledgeable staff for the best choice for your style.

LINEN

An ancient plant fibre produced in Europe from the flax plant, or in Asia from the Asian Flax plant and called ramie. Linen is renowned for its tensile strength while wet - the reason it showed up so often in garments used in ancient trades and in kitchens. produced in a variety of weights and weaves, this most versatile of plant fibres is highly prized for warm and hot weather garments, as well as for art pieces. Yes, the textile wrinkles, and should be ironed while damp. Dry cleaning is not required if the fabric is washed before cutting.

LACE

Traditional symbol of status and wealth, modern laces are no longer only made of cotton or silk, and are not restricted to white or black colours. Our stores (especially Vancouver) carry traditional bridal laces (Guipure and Chantilly), bullion laces (guipures using metallic threads), dentelles de Calais in modern muted tones by Solstice(c); laces from the famed paris producers Riechers at Marescot(c); laces sequined, beaded, pearled, in a wide variety of colours and at several different price points. Our skilled staff is always willing to help you put together something very special.

POLYESTER

The choice for wrinkle-free, hard wearing garments. Modern polyesters are generally made of finer filaments, and many rival the hand and hang of more traditional textiles. In a variety of widths and weights, prints and solids, this yarn has become the workhorse of most wardrobes. You want it, we have it.

RAYON

Man-made, but not synthetic, rayon yarn is extruded from treated wood pulp waste. long filaments are woven and sold as rayon. Short filaments are made into tougher yarns and woven into textiles known as viscose. Rayon and viscose are great choices for warm and hot weather wear. These yarns are also found in combination with polyester (to increase strength and lessen wrinkle), cotton (to increase strength and absorbance), and lycra (for the extra ease.) Linings are often made of rayon textiles.

NYLON

A synthetic yarn related to polyester. Nylon is water resistant, and used to produce textiles for outer use. Also keeping its shape well, it is frequently used to make tulles, crinoline, and organza. Though it can be washed, nylon should be washed by hand or in a very gentle machine cycle. Nylon wrinkles while wet and in the presence of water. Do not soak, and do not use very gently warm iron to touch up while the fabric is soaking wet.

ACETATE

A synthetic yarn based on wood-pulp as per rayon, Acetate is prized for its long fibre, which gives high lustre to the textile. Woven in various weights, you might buy Acetate as a lining, or for bridal attendant dresses, bridal gowns, ring pillows, or occasional cushions in the boudoir.
