Thanks to all those who donated their sewing time to make a total of 107
breast surgery comfort pillows. Special thanks to the anonymous lady who
also donated supplies for these pillows. Click
here to read the thank you card from the Breast
Health Centre.
Did
you know that there are approximately 20- 30 breast surgeries a month on
Vancouver Island? This means the Breast Health Center gives out on average
about 300 pillows per year! The pillows are used for patients who are having
lymph nodes removed from under their arm(s). The pillow is placed under
their arm after surgery to protect this incision from rubbing against the
other incision which may be on their breast or chest wall. It is truly a
comfort pillow which the patients continue to tell us was so helpful for
them.

Naturally coloured cottons
from Peru!
We have just received
organic cotton from Peru - silky soft.
In three gentle shades –
the yarn is coloured without the use of dye. Yes, this means that the
colours of these cottons are not achieved through the use of dyes but by
using fibres from
naturally pigmented cotton
plants.
It’s a return to thinking
organically about cotton. Cotton plants used to be available in several
colours; but coloured strains were slowly phased out of commercial
cultivation and production. The textile Industry wanted the creamy white
strains because inexpensive chemical dyes would create an unlimited palette
and no specialized harvest techniques or facilities were needed, as they are
for naturally pigmented cottons.
Our Peruvian supplier has
been awarded organic certification for both the growing and textile
transformation processes by several internationally recognized and
accredited inspection organizations.
These fabrics are also
Fair Trade certified.
Organic coloured cotton is
a valuable crop for rural indigenous farmers, and a more socially acceptable
choice than coca production.

Surrounded by Cedar
cordially invite you to
join us for a very special luncheon on June 19th 2009.
It is our goal to finish the work we began
with the First Nations art class at Vic High and create a button blanket for
the Earth
In this generous act of giving and
honouring, these youth have created 12 button blanket robes as gifts of
honouring for a significant person in their lives.
On June 19th, we will complete
this act of acknowledgement, by participating in the symbolic connection of
these blankets into one large blanket for the earth.
After we blanket the earth, then these
blankets will be taken and gifted to acknowledge the important contributions
of these people on the lives of these youth.
Please forward to any interested
parties... All are welcome to participate. All Drums are welcome.
You are also welcome to include your own
personal regalia in the making of a button blanket for the earth
